The Grand National Betting

April 4, 2008

The Grand National betting race is Britain’s most famous horse race.  A Grade 3 handicap chase, the Grand National was first run in 1836 as the Great Liverpool Steeplechase before it was renamed The Grand National.

It is the biggest betting race on the English racing calendar with many punters enjoying the future bet type which allows you to bet on horses well in advance of the race.

The Grand National has always been in the spotlight and not always for the right reasons. Because of the controversy surrounding ‘cruelty to animals’, the race has often been targeted by animal rights activists because of the sheer volume of horses being retired from the race, a gruelling 4 miles and 4 furlongs (7242 metres) long over 30 fences, and they aren’t the white picket fences in your front yard.

The Grand National is the centrepiece of a three day meeting at Aintree Racecourse. The race is beamed live around the globe with more than 500million watching the race each year.

The Duke won the inaugural race in 1836 and followed it up with victory in the following year.

The race has certainly made horses into legends with three time winner Red Rum (1973, 1974, 1977) the most notable. He also finished second on two occasions in 1975 and 1976.

Grand National Facts:

Most successful horse – Red Rum3 wins (1973, 1974, 1977)
