The Melbourne Cup final field has been announced and to the surprise of many, the Danny O’Brien trained Vigor who was 25th in order of entry, failed to gain a start in Tuesday’s two mile feature. The VRC Committee should really hang their heads in shame on this decision, it’s made their “role” in racing a complete waste of time.
A few year’s ago they had a decision to make. The WA trained Free At Last had qualified for the Cup and was IN THE FIELD, only to be balloted out of Melbourne Cup by the committee………Now Vigor, who ran 3rd in the Caulfield Cup from an outside gate, has been overlooked for two 200/1 shots and two 100/1 shots……then there are a few in the 60-80/1 range that won’t win if they start on Saturday night.
Now my own personal view is that if you qualify your horse for the Melbourne Cup then you are entitled to run it. If you haven’t qualified then you have no right to be in the field.
However, once the VRC used their discretionary powers to dump Free At Last from the Melbourne Cup their decision late Saturday smacks of not only inconsistence but incompetence.

The Melbourne Cup took shape this morning with one of the three Melbourne Cup betting favourites, Efficient being scratched from Tuesday’s Cup along with the Godolphin stables main Melbourne Cup chance Kirklees, who failed to fire a shot in the Caulfield Cup.
This has resulted in the Danny O’Brien trained Vigor being a firmer in Melbourne Cup betting after he was scratched form today’s Mackinnon Stakes and saved for Tuesday’s Cup.
Could be a big day for O’Brien who now saddles up the VRC Derby favourite Rockferry, a half brother to former champion 3YO Excellent. Looks like a chance for some serious thunderstorms during the day whic should see the Kiwi Monaco Consul just about jump favourite after as much as 50/1 was bet about him in first Derby betting markets, this bloke eats mud.

Plenty of money to be made with your NBA Betting today with the Orlando Magic the best bet of the day to cover the nba line against the New Jersey Nets. The Magic has to give up 9.5 points in this clash and they should do it in style against the Nets who are set for one hell of a long season.
Detroit are the second of our selections in NBA basketball betting today. The Pistons host Oklahoma City and should cover the 5.5 point spread, again with ease.
The third of our selections is the Cleveland Cavaliers. LeBron James and the Cavs have started 0-2 this campaign, you can expect them to bounce back to the winners list against the Timberwolves who somehow managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against the Nets in their season opener.
Three good bets to give you plenty of $ for the weekend ahead.

The Lee Freedman trained Speed Gifted will miss the 2009 Melbourne Cup after he pulled up sore in last week’s Cox Plate where he beat just one runner home. The track was too firm for him that day and another firm track next Tuesday on Melbourne Cup day at Flemington racecourse looms.
In other Melbourne Cup news, the David Hayes trained Changingoftheguard is set to have his maiden Australian start in the Melbourne Cup. I’d be laying this bloke all day long

The Bart Cummings trained Cox Plate winner So You Think will miss Saturday’s $750,000 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington races and instead be saved for the $1 million Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington races on Saturday week.
In other Mackinnon Stakes news, the Danny O’Brien has accepted with Caulfield Cup placegetter Vigor but wont decide on a start until later in the week. Vigor is currently 29th in order of entry for the Melbourne Cup Field and may chase an exemption from the ballot with a win in the Mackinnon Stakes.

The feature race tomorrow is the WS Cox Plate and Whobegotyou is the generous $3-00 favourite to take out Australia’s premier weight for age contest at the Valley in Cox Plate Betting Odds with sportsbet.com.au.
Going through the Cox Plate formguide its hard to see how they are going to beat the rising star.
El Segundo: Best days are behind him but his record at the Valley gives him a hope at odds.
Zipping: No.
Vision and Power: I did like his last start in the Yalumba. Didn’t have the turn off foot when they sprinted but did hit the line well. A good eachway chance here.
Nom Du Jeu: No.
Scenic Shot: Lacks the class. Honest as the day is long and he will be grinding home, trying his best as he always does but he simply lacks the quality to win a Cox Plate.
Black Piranha: No.
Sir Slick: Shouldn’t even be in the field.
Road To Rock: An outside chance to win and has definite place claims.
Speed Gifted: No. This horse is going to jump at ridiculously short odds and the bookies are set to make a small fortune on him running unplaced. He has a couple of wins next to his name but if you go through the races he has won and seen the “quality” he has beaten, you will want to lay this bloke all day. His Melbourne Cup odds are just as big a joke.
Whobegotyou: Grows a leg at the track and whatever beats him will win. A slight query as a genuine stayer after being rolled in the VRC Derby and if Sir Slick sets a helter skelter pace in the lead then, depending on how the race unfolds he may be suspect but if you dont worry about what can go wrong and just pick the best horse with everything being equal then this blokes wins eased down by 2 lengths.
Heart Of Dreams: The obvious second elect. Should enjoy the run of the race and could put a race winning gap on his main rival but will then leave himself open to be run over by whatever is following him throughout. I htink the horse is in a bit of a catch 22 situation. I’d be willing to take him on if i was a bookie.
Rock Kingdom: Not the worse horse to bet on here. Definite place claims for the Epsom winner.
Manhatten Rain: He can be the blow out horse. Lightly weighted on pace runner that can take advantage of the pace set by Sir Slick.
So You Think: His odds are shorter than they should be but he has some chance due to the weight advantage for 3 year olds. I don’t think he is seasoned enough to take on a Cox Plate field at his first prep but he is going to enjoy the speed on here and from gate 7 he should be sitting in a far better postion than in the Guineas.
Cox Plate Tips:
Whobegotyou
Heart Of Dreams
Vision and Power
Road To Rock
