Caulfield Thoroughbred Racing

Caulfield Thoroughbred Racing is conducted at Classic Caulfield which is home of the Caulfield Cup 2400m. The Caulfield Cup is the traditional lead-up race to the greatest two-mile handicap race in the world, the Melbourne Cup which is run at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November.

The Caulfield Cup was first run and won in 1879. In 1881 there were two Caulfield Cups held. Blue Ribbon won the Cup in the Autumn with Master Avenel saluting in the spring. There has been only one dead-heat for first in the Caulfield Cup and that in 1909 when Aborigine 30/1 and Blue Book 20/1 shared the spoils. The Cups King Bart Cummings has trained the winner of the Caulfield Cup on six occasions.

Caulfield races hold 11 Group 1 races throughout the racing season including the CF Orr Stakes, Futurity Stakes, Blue Diamond Stakes, Oakleigh Plate, Dubai Racing Club Cup, Underwood Stakes, Yalumba Stakes, Caulfield Guineas, Thousand Guineas, Toorak Handicap and the Caulfield Cup.
